Kindergarten Spreads Christmas Cheer!

Kindergarten's music program, Season of Love, was a success! Students enjoyed dressing up in their finest holiday clothes and performing old and new Christmas carols. We sang, did actions, played jingle bells, and pretended to be reindeer! Hope you're all in the Christmas spirit now after watching :)

Christmas Sing-Along

Happy Holidays from my classroom to your home! Students are gearing up for their upcoming Annual Christmas Sing-Along :) The sing-along will take place tomorrow, December 18 @ 9 AM in the Marshall gymnasium. Each grade has prepared 2 song selections and will perform them for the rest of the school's enjoyment. This year, there is something for everyone: festive actions to familiar tunes, traditional carols, accompaniment with recorders and boomwhackers, and maybe even a cup routine! We will conclude the sing-along with the traditional all-school 12 Days of Christmas complete with crazy actions. Students are to wear their Marshall field trip shirt so each grade looks as good as they sound.  MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

November's Composer of the Month

What better way to get into the holiday spirit, then with a composer who wrote one of the most popular and performed Christmas-time ballets of all time?! Peter (Pytor) Tchaikovsky has written some of the greatest works of the Romantic Era, including the 1812 Overture, 10 operas, orchestral pieces, but is best known for his famous ballets (The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and more). Tchaikovsky was also the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally and he helped capture the unique sound of Russian music. This month we enjoyed learning dances, cup-passing games, and silly lyrics to our 3 pieces from The Nutcracker!

6th Grade Program sure did rock & roll!!

6th grade's program was a SMASH hit with audiences this Wednesday! We traveled back to the '50s to an on-air TV show-At the Bandstand! Students loved getting to dress up (look how good they look!) and singing old favorite songs from the poodle-skirt decade. Due to popular demand, they will be performing it again for the entire school on Oct. 30th at 10 am :) I even heard some of the kids say they wish they lived in the 1950s!

October's Composer of the Month

This month's composer is one of my all-time favorite composers! Eric Whitacre is a world-wide phenomenon and Grammy-winning American composer. He has written 100+ works and is one of the most popular composers alive. He is best known for his choral works, but he writes both choral and instrumental music. Whitacre is known for combining odd blends of notes to create cluster chords and dividing the ensemble into as many as 33 parts at one time! He is a great example of working hard to accomplish great things-he entered college not knowing how to read music and when he graduated he was accepted into Julliard (one of the most prestigious music schools in the world) for his masters degree! Whitacre has also embraced modern technology and is the only composer to put together a "virtual choir." Ask your child what that means :) The last one consisted of over 8000 videos from singers in 101 different countries!

In college, we skyped Eric Whitacre!
